My top idea for conservative, income-oriented investors in the coming year is a closed-end fund that invests in public and privately-held companies doing work in the life sciences arena, writes Nate Pile of Nate's Notes.
The life sciences industry includes stocks in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, managed healthcare and medical equipment, and healthcare information technology and services.
This recommended fundambrecht & Quist Life Sciences Fund (HQL)as also our top pick last year, and the fund rose 44% in 2013.
In addition to rising in value, the fund has a dividend policy of paying out 2% of its net asset value of each quarter.
By choosing to take this payout in the form of a dividend reinvestment, rather than cash, investors have done very well for themselves as they've watched, both the size of their holdings, and the share price itself, increase as the years have rolled by.
To be sure, you will always be able to get more bang for your buck by owning individual biotech stocks.

Just consider this: By 2025, 300 of America coal plants will close due to EPA policies for a total of 44,000 megawatts of generating capacity in 33 states to be taken off line. Advisors' Opinion:- [By Sean Williams]
A more expansive menu that allowed breakfast to be served all day could mean bigger profits for McDonald's -- but let face it: That's really been Jack in the Box's (NASDAQ: JACK ) territory since day one. While Jack in the Box has made no qualms about emulating McDonald's interior redesigns and menu expansion in order to boost its own sales, it's been the company's promotion of its all-day breakfasts that make it one of the fastest growing fast-food restaurants in the United States.

Calling all cash flows
When you are trying to buy the market's best stocks, it's worth checking up on your companies' free cash flow once a quarter or so, to see whether it bears any relationship to the net income in the headlines. That's what we do with this series. Today, we're checking in on Jack in the Box (Nasdaq: JACK ) , whose recent revenue and earnings are plotted below. - [By Jeremy Bowman]
Noodles and burritos
The real appeal of Noodles and Company seems to come from its ambitious expansion plan. In its S-1 filing, management says it believes the company's store count can grow from 339 stores today to 2,500 in 15-20 years. There's no question that management can continue opening stores, but the company needs to be able to maintain enough appeal to make the expansion profitable. Jack in the Box (NASDAQ: JACK ) , by comparison, has over 2,500 restaurants nationwide, including 600 Qdoba Mexican Grills, yet its market cap sits at just $1.8 billion, a similar valuation to the much smaller Noodles. Notably, Qdoba was once hailed as the successor to Chipotle, but its parent company recently announced it would close 67 underperforming locations of the burrito chain because of declining same-store sales. - [By Sean Williams]
The last fast-food chains standing
If Jack in the Box (NASDAQ: JACK ) and Wendy's (NASDAQ: WEN ) can manage to go a few weeks without sticking their foot in the their mouth, they both have a shot at picking up market share based on these PR gaffes from McDonald's and Burger King.
