Hot Sliver Stocks To Buy For 2014

Merck (NYSE: MRK  ) has rolled out impressive phase 2 data that shows that it too has a very compelling hepatitis C regimen that may eliminate the use of side-effect laden Peginterferon and ribavirin -- the standard of care just a few short years ago.

But Merck's midstage data comes months after Gilead (NASDAQ: GILD  ) filed its application for approval with the FDA for its own two drug combination that also eliminates the use of that pesky prior generation cocktail.

MRK data by YCharts

Crowding the bus
Gilead's head start could relegate Merck's MK-5172 and MK-8742 mashup to second- or third-tier status, depending on how much credit you give to Bristol Myers' (NYSE: BMY  ) daclatasvir. All three of these combination approaches do a significantly better job of eliminating viral load in hepatitis C, with fewer side effects than previous options, over a shorter treatment time period. That's a win, win, win for those keeping track.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Canadian Value]

As many of our clients know, Jensen focuses primarily on the discounted cash flow (DCF) method to value equities. Our long held belief is that the intrinsic value of a business is the present value of the cash flows the company is expected to pay its shareholders in the future. The remainder of this paper explores some of the advantages and disadvantages of using either DCF or multiples and outlines why we believe DCF is the more fundamentally sound way to value equities.

  • [By David Kerr]

Let take a look at using a version of the Discounted Cash Flow method (DCF) to valuate the share price. I will use the most recent Earnings Per Share of 2.32, an 18.9% growth rate over the next 10 years (which is the average EPS growth rate of the past 10 years), a Terminal Growth Rate of 2% (average inflation rate for 2013 so far), with 10 years of Terminal Growth at a Discount Rate of 12% to be safe. That leaves us with a Fair Value of $58.85 and a 42% Margin of Safety. That a healthy margin.

  • [By Robert Rapier]

The partnership has generated $7.6 billion of distributable cash flow (DCF) over the past nine years, paying out just short of three quarters of that total and reinvesting the rest. The long-term distribution coverage checks in at a prudent 134%.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

We're seeing the exact same setup in shares of small-cap HVAC firm Aaon (AAON). The biggest difference is that in AAON's case, the ascending triangle pattern is coming in at the top of this stock's recent price action, not at the bottom. That makes this a more textbook trade for September.

Another important difference is the fact that AAON hasn't triggered yet. Shares have been coiling below $26 resistance since the middle of the summer; a breakout above that $26 level is the indicator that it's time to buy. Whenever you're looking at any technical price pattern, it's critical to think in terms of buyers and sellers. Triangles and other price pattern names are a good quick way to explain what's going on in this stock, but they're not the reason it's tradable. Instead, it all comes down to supply and demand for shares.

That resistance line at $26 is a price where there's an excess of supply of shares; in other words, it's a place where sellers have been more eager to take recent gains and sell their shares than buyers have been to buy. That's what makes the move above it so significant -- a breakout indicates that buyers are finally strong enough to absorb all of the excess supply above that price level.

Wait for that to happen before you put your money on this trade.
