Top 10 Dividend Stocks To Own For 2014

The stock market recently logged its biggest one-day dip in over a year. Worries over the Federal Reserve's policies had investors on edge, with many choosing to sell rather than stick through the volatility.Dividend stocks have been hit particularly hard thanks to fears that they'll lose their draw once interest rates begin creeping up.

However, there's a much better investment strategy than trying to guess which asset class Wall Street will favor next: Stick with your plan and try to use swings in market sentiment to your advantage.

With that in mind, here are three promising dividend stocks that have gotten a lot cheaper lately.

Campbell Soup (NYSE: CPB  )
This convenience-food company has been on a buying binge. Campbell spent $1.55 billion last year on Bolthouse Farms, and recently closed a few smaller deals, including one for Plum Organics, the No. 2 brand of organic baby food in the U.S. That aggressive acquisition strategy has given Campbell's sales a shot in the arm. Last quarter, for example, revenue jumped by 15% almost entirely thanks to new sales from the Bolthouse Farms brand.

The M&T Bank Corp. (NYSE: MTB) and Hudson City Bancorp Inc. (NASDAQ: HCBK) transaction is the only pending deal of 2012 vintage due to various regulatory concerns. MTB currently has 9% short interest outstanding and PACW 15%. Another merger covered is the deal between Provident New York Bancorp (NASDAQ: PBNY) and Sterling Bancorp (NYSE: STL), and the balance are simply too small for us to warrant effort.

    An ongoing slimming process
So, when B of A announced a combined reduction of 411 workers in two Legacy units located in Texas, it wasn't a huge surprise. The bank has recently closed a mortgage servicing location in New York state, and both the building lease and a passel of servicing rights were snapped up by M&T Bank (NYSE: MTB  ) , a large northeastern regional anxious to get even bigger and more diverse. Prior to that, Bank of America had laid off more than 50 Legacy unit workersin California, as well as almost 470 in New Jersey.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By John Divine]

While losers outnumbered gainers by a 2-to-1 margin in the stock market today, some stocks felt the pain more harshly than others. Avon Products (NYSE: AVP  ) and the two stocks below are such examples. Shares of the beauty products company lost 2.8% Monday, perhaps because investors realize the significant challenges Avon still faces. The entire business model depends on the size and capability of Avon's sales representatives, and last year their fleet size fell by 15%. With North American sales halved since 2007, sales still falling in the most recent quarter, and a net loss in the fourth quarter, things don't look great right now. Thankfully, Avon is popular with the Hispanic community, which should be a boon to its revenue as U.S. demographics change over time.

  • [By David Dittman]

Answer: I don’t anticipate a spate of dividend cuts. FirstEnergy Corp’s (NYSE: FE) problems were apparent last fall, when it announced 2013 Q3 numbers. We do have TECO Energy Inc (NYSE: TE) and PG&E Corp (NYSE: PCG) on the UF Dividend Watch List, though the latter is in a much more precarious position than the former.

The regulatory environment is generally improving, as state and federal authorities are beginning to recognize the investment utilities have made over the past half-decade in system reliability and capacity expansion.

Another key supporting dividends is a healthier US economy, which should support better power demand from commercial and industrial customers.

Earnings per share came in at $0.35 while competitors DDR Corp. (DDR) and Kimco Realty Corporation (KIM) reported earnings per share of -$0.56 and $0.27, respectively. With a price to earnings ratio of 123.57, it is clear investors are expecting higher growth from this stock than its competitors, whose price to earnings ratio are twice as half. I think it will not take very long for the stock to appreciate in value at a much higher rate due to higher revenue, good investor and market sentiment towards the stock, and an improved real estate market.

Of companies out there that are traded on the U.S. exchanges, Seadrill (NYSE: SDRL  ) is setting itself apart from the others, as it plans to build 14 new ultra-deepwater capable rigs between now and 2016. Not only will this move expand its ultra-deepwater fleet by 44%, but it also puts more rigs under construction than three of its main competitors -- ENSCO, Diamond Offshore, and Transocean -- combined. With day rates for these rigs averaging $450,000, an addition of 14 rigs could potentially increase the company's current annual revenue by 50%.
