Top 10 Industrial Disributor Companies To Watch In Right Now

Each week, I endeavor to report the results of the Big Idea Portfolio, a collection of five tech stocks that I believe will crush the market over a three-year period. I've done it before; my last tussle with Mr. Market ended with me beating the index's average return by 13.35%.

Real money was on the line then as it is now, which means any one of the five stocks you see below could tip the scales in my favor. This time, Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) reported strong gains in the wake of its first earnings beat in four tries.

Let's start with the really good news: Profits came in $0.02 ahead of estimates as revenue improved 11.3%. Credit the iPad for those gains. Revenue jumped 40% as unit sales soared 65% year-over year. Average selling prices fell from $530.93 to $449.04, no doubt because of the popularity of the lower-priced iPad Mini. Increasing interest in iTunes content may also be helping boost tablet sales.

CEO Tim Cook also agreed loosen Apple's purse strings. Existing investors will see a 15% bump in the dividend, to $3.05 a share, when the payout arrives next month. More importantly, the board has authorized up to $50 billion extra for repurchasing shares of Apple stock. Overnight, the iEmpire has become one of tech's most interesting value and income plays.

We're seeing the exact opposite setup in shares of MFA Financial (MFA). Unlike NCT, shares of MFA have been in a well-defined downtrend since the middle of May. That high probability range puts this stock's likely target price lower for the end of August.

Since the best time to buy an uptrend is at support, it makes sense that the best time to sell a stock in a downtrend is at trendline resistance. That's the exact level that MFA is testing this week. If you own MFA right now, it makes sense to be a seller on the first semblance of a bounce lower.

Momentum provides some extra confirmation here too. RSI has been suck down in bearish territory since the uptrend began in May. Oscillators like RSI tend to become range-bound when stocks' price action trends. I'd look for a move above 50 on RSI as a precondition to a move higher in price.

  • [By Dividend]

MFA Financial (MFA) has a market capitalization of $2.68 billion. The company employs 37 people, generates revenue of $499.16 million and has a net income of $306.84 million. • [By Jon C. Ogg]

MFA Financial Inc. (NYSE: MFA) has an estimated $0.20 decline in book value. This is partially attributable to the company’s recent special dividend declaration. For the third quarter, Sterne Agee sees MFA with a core earnings per share of $0.19, yet the dividend of $0.50 is a combined $0.22 estimated and $0.28 special.

It has operations primarily in the United States, Europe, and internationally. The company was incorporated in 2005 and is based in New York, New York.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Morgans Hotel Group (MHGC) operates, owns, acquires, develops and redevelops boutique hotels, primarily in gateway cities and select resort markets in the U.S., Europe and other international locations and nightclubs, restaurants. This stock closed up 3.8% to $6.99 in Tuesday's trading session.

    Tuesday's Range: $6.73-$7.06

    52-Week Range: $4.66-$8.15

    Tuesday's Volume: 388,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 196,219

From a technical perspective, MHGC spiked higher here right above its 200-day moving average of $6.45 with above-average volume. This move is quickly pushing shares of MHGC within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if MHGC manages to take out Tuesday's high of $7.06 and then once it takes out more near-term resistance at $7.20 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in MHGC as long as it's trending above its 200-day at $6.41 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 196,219 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then MHGC will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $8 to its 52-week high at $8.15. Any high-volume move above those levels will then give MHGC a chance to tag its next major overhead resistance levels at $9 to $10.

With CGG (CGG), the company has signed a long-term agreement to provide RoqSCAN technology, a real-time, fully portable, quantitative and automated rock properties and mineralogical analyzer. Despite Craighead's relative ebullience regarding North America, it nevertheless appears that the sizzle at Baker Hughes lies in the international markets. As I noted last week, the company has teamed up with CGGVeritaz (NYSE: CGG  ) to add substantial seismic capabilities to its global repertoire. Further, it's working with Norway's Statoil (NYSE: STO  ) on new projects in the North Sea, the Norwegian Sea, and the Barents Sea. It's also been contracted by Chevron (NYSE: CVX  ) for work on the giant Gorgon project in Australia, and its gearing up with Russia's Lukoil and Statoil on the West Qurna-2 oil fields in Iraq.
