The fallout from Detroit's bankruptcy filing has investors - and even ratings agencies - questioning the validity of the bond rating system.
Now investors need to know if it can be fixed in a way that actually helps those investing in general obligation (GO) bonds.
In June, Detroit Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr sent the financial equivalent of a nuclear blast through the muni bond markets when he stated that holders of Detroit's GO bonds - whose holdings total roughly $600 million - will be lumped together with other unsecured creditors who collectively account for $11 billion in city obligations.
Historically, GO bonds were seen as the safest form of municipal debt. That's because historically municipalities would raise taxes, cut services - do anything - rather than force losses on bondholders.
"The bottom line is, Orr said that these bonds are unsecured, which potentially forces a loss on these investments," explains Money Morning Chief Investment Strategist Keith Fitz-Gerald. "If that's the case, then here we go: those formerly secured debts are in fact no safer than junk bonds. Which means, all of a sudden, in the blink of an eye, all the ratings on municipalities everywhere are suspect."

What the Catch With Multi-Corp International Inc? According to various disclosures, no transactions have occurred to mention Multi-Corp International in various investment newsletters. Moreover, I am not seeing any recent news on the newswires about the company with the latest press release dating from late July about the posting of a blanket bond. However and as I noted in an earlier about BluForest Inc (OTCMKTS: BLUF), the company has been named in a Freedom of Information request with the SEC by George Sharp (of Pumps&Dumps.com) for all complaints filed against Jim Can. George apparently contends that Jim controls BluForest along with Multi-Corp International, but the former has recently won an injunction against the latter for lleged, completely false, defamatory claims and statements.Otherwise, investors should be aware that Multi-Corp International most recent financials date from the end of September of last year meaning its investor beware until they get current.

Costco is a warehouse chain that sells large and bulk items to consumers looking to save an extra few bucks. A recent insider sale seems to not be having a significant effect on the company. The stock has been exploding higher and is now trading slightly below highs for the year. Over the last four quarters, earnings and revenues have been rising, however, investors in the company have had mixed feelings about these announcements. Relative to its peers and sector, Costco has been a year-to-date performance leader. Look for Costco to OUTPERFORM.
